There are 150 different brands of dental implant available in world market. Most of them are commercially pure titanium. So, patients are often confused which brand to go for. As an implantologist for over 28 years, I advise my patients to research the brand of the surgeon rather than searching for the brand of the implant. Some basic parameters you should look for is given below
- How long this implant is in the market?
Longer this product is in use that much of scientific data is available for the surgeon to choose this product. First ever implant available was Branemark implant from Sweden. This was an external hex connection. This became outdated and newer internal hex connection came in the market. The Branamark implant was purchased by Nobel pharma and they re branded it as Nobel BioCare which again is a leading brand even now.
- Certifications
American certifications FDA and European certifications CE are a good criterion for selecting the brand
Most of the leading brands are certified. In fact, unlike in olden times it is much faster now to get certifications
- Surface treatment
This again is dentist choice as this is too technical for patients to understand. Tiunite surface is a proprietary surface treatment for Nobel BioCare and Surfaces coated with hydroxy appetite crystals are again much better than the old, machined surface as the Osseo integration is much faster in surface treated implants.
- Thread pattern
Again, it is operators’ choice. My personal choice is always a self-tapping implant is much better than the friction fit implants like Endopore implants.
- Implants designed for immediate loading
There are certain implants are designed for immediate loading. Basel implants have long polished shank much useful in immediate loading as the exposure of threads are not seen in this case. This reduces periimplantitis.
- Implants with diversity in prosthetic components
This again is operators’ choice and too technical for patients to understand. I personally like some components like, multiunit abutments or dynamic abutment screws as it is an excellent solution whenever I do intentional angulation of implants.
- Cost effective successful implants
This again an operator choice. Inexpensive as for very expensive brands when the success rate is all same. Remember bone does not recognize the brand, all it needs pure titanium and if titanium is placed in aseptic conditions integration happens. But in my clinic, I always place time tested implant brands.
SO, THE BOTTOM LINE IS TO LOOK FOR THE BRAND OF THE DOCTOR RATHER THAN LOOKING AT THE BRAND OF THE IMPLANT.
