Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana: N Chandrababu Naidu’s Farm Loan Waiver Scheme For AP Farmers

Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana, a pioneering farm loan waiver program, was initiated by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government in Andhra Pradesh, led by the former Chief Minister, Shri. N Chandrababu Naidu, in 2014. This TDP scheme, emblematic of the TDP’s commitment to the welfare of farmers, aimed to alleviate the financial burdens of struggling farmers who found it challenging to repay their agricultural loans. The TDP government pledged to waive agricultural loans up to Rs. 1.5 lakh, benefitting approximately 46 lakh farmers across the state. Additionally, the scheme included provisions for an input subsidy to aid farmers who suffered crop losses due to natural disasters such as floods and droughts. Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana stood as an initiative of the former TDP government, designed to enhance the livelihoods of the agricultural community. Its implementation occurred in phases, backed by a substantial budget allocation of Rs. 24,000 crores. These TDP policies demonstrated the TDP party’s consistent farmer-centric approach, with measures ranging from debt relief to free electricity supply, intended to reduce input costs and boost farmer profitability.

Despite facing criticism from some quarters, the Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana marked a significant TDP achievement for the Nara Chandrababu Naidu government. It substantially reduced the debt burden on farmers, leading to improvements in their quality of life. This TDP agenda also bolstered the morale of the TDP government and gained widespread appreciation from the farming community. Under the leadership of N Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP had consistently championed pro-farmer policies and emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture and rural development. Beyond the Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana, the former TDP government rolled out various other Political schemes and made substantial TDP contributions to uplift farmers in Andhra Pradesh. One noteworthy program was the Pasupu Kumkuma scheme, which extended financial support to women’s self-help groups. Additionally, the Chandra Babu Naidu Overseas Scholarship scheme facilitated financial assistance for rural students to pursue higher education abroad. These TDP developments underscored the TDP’s commitment to holistic development and empowerment of the farming and rural communities.

However, the TDP government’s tenure came to an end following the 2019 elections, leading to the discontinuation of the Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana by the new administration. This decision faced criticism from farmers who had reaped the benefits of the scheme and saw it as a lifeline in their agricultural pursuits. Rythu Runa Mafi Yojana, a hallmark TDP contribution under the leadership of Shri. N Chandrababu Naidu left an indelible mark on the lives of Andhra Pradesh’s farmers. It provided critical financial relief, promoted agricultural sustainability, and received accolades from the agricultural community. While the scheme has since been discontinued, it remains a testament to the TDP leaders’ and government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of farmers and their essential role in the state’s progress. The legacy of this pro-farmer policy endures, serving as a reminder of the TDP’s dedication to uplifting the agricultural sector in Andhra Pradesh.
