The circular economy challenges the ‘take-make-dispose’ mentality of the linear economy and replaces it with a regenerative approach.
What are the Key Principles of Circular Economy?
- Reduce Waste and Pollution: The first principle of circular economy is to design products and systems in a way that minimizes waste, particularly, minimizes plastic waste which takes hundreds of years to degenerate and decompose and pollution from the outset. This involves using sustainable materials like glass, steel, paper, etc. that can be easily recycled or composted as well as designing products that are easy to disassemble, and adopting manufacturing processes that produce less waste.
- Keep Products and Materials in Use: The second principle emphasizes the importance of maintaining the value of products and materials for as long as possible. This can be achieved through practices, such as repairing, refurbishing and remanufacturing products, and by creating business models that focus on sharing or leasing rather than ownership
- Regenerate Natural Systems: The third principle focuses on restoring and enhancing natural ecosystems. This can be done by using renewable energy, sustainable products and solutions, promoting regenerative agriculture, and ensuring that any biological materials used in production can safely be returned to the environment.
