N Chandrababu Naidu’s Pioneering Shift To CNG Buses In Andhra Pradesh

During the tenure of Nara Chandrababu Naidu as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, there were remarkable advancements in the state, with a strong focus on clean and efficient transportation. One notable TDP achievement was the ambitious plan to convert the state-run Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses in key cities like Hyderabad, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This transformation marked a significant shift towards cleaner and more sustainable public transportation. Under the visionary leadership of Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the state of Andhra Pradesh witnessed unprecedented development. This progress was made possible through the dedication of TDP MLAs and leaders, who worked tirelessly to overcome the limitations of the state government. Their efforts led to the successful implementation of numerous projects and initiatives that have greatly benefited the people of Andhra Pradesh.

The introduction of CNG buses in Andhra Pradesh began in 2007 when APSRTC deployed 311 CNG vehicles at the Vidyadharapuram Depot in Vijayawada. These buses were later expanded to serve other areas, by N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP government including Governorpet-II and Ibrahimpatnam Depots. This move aimed to provide the public with cleaner and environmentally friendly transportation options. The fleet included 191 Metro buses, 99 City buses, and 13 Low Floor Non-A.C. buses, all of which contributed to improving the state’s air quality. One of the most noteworthy TDP developments during this period was the development of a long-distance CNG bus, unveiled by India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan. This TDP contribution was part of a strategic partnership with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the largest CNG distributor in India. Agility Fuel Solutions, in collaboration with its Indian partner Advantek Fuel Systems, played a pivotal role in developing, manufacturing and delivering a composite cylinder-based entire bus fuel system. This innovation significantly increased the range of CNG buses in India, from a maximum of 350 km to over 1100 km.

The adoption of CNG as a preferred fuel for long-distance travel was a groundbreaking move of the TDP agenda, as it offered economic and environmental advantages over traditional diesel fuel. It aligned with the BS-VI Emissions Standards, which came into effect on April 1, 2020, signalling a shift towards a gas-based economy. CNG’s affordability and lower emissions made it an attractive option for fleet owners looking to comply with the new emission standards. In summary, the period under the leadership of Nara Chandrababu Naidu and the TDP Government in Andhra Pradesh was marked by significant achievements in the realm of clean and sustainable transportation. The transition to CNG buses, the extended range of CNG vehicles, and the commitment to reducing diesel usage were all key milestones in making Andhra Pradesh a more environmentally conscious and technologically advanced state.
